What are the ideal climatic conditions for the orchid?

The orchid is a plant that requires a mild temperature, it feels very good when the minimum temperature is 15 C °, but it can also stay in a greenhouse or on a veranda if the degrees vary between 15 and 24 C ° . Be careful, it does not support drafts and sunstroke can be fatal, the east side window then appears as the ideal location!

What maintenance would you recommend?

Contrary to popular belief, the orchid does not require any particular maintenance, it is especially the dosage of water that matters. Water your orchid once a week, avoiding temperature differences between that of the water and that of the outside. If you have too hard water, dilute it with a few drops of lemon, the orchid is a fan. Also avoid putting water on its leaves, it will not recover. Remember to fertilize with special orchid fertilizer every fortnight. Small tip: the flower stalks of large orchids (stems) often tend to break under the weight of their flowers, remember to strengthen them with stakes. Finally, after flowering, do not forget to cut the stem above the second node, thus ensuring a longevity of 3 to 7 years!

Repotting, when, why and how?

The orchid draws a lot of mineral salts and other substances that it needs. These reserves are depleted and disappear completely with the successive waterings. It is therefore necessary to repot to replenish these contributions, but also to allow the roots, often too cramped in their pot, better development. To find out, nothing is easier than to grasp the plant at the base of its stem, turn it over and remove it from its pot, if soilless roots appear, repotting is essential. Remove the used mixture, the dead roots, possibly shorten the roots too long and replant the plant in a slightly higher pot.
