A rose from the cold
It's not just snowdrops, crocuses and primroses that bloom in winter! White, green, purple, red or purple, hellebores are ultra-resistant to the cold and can be admired from December to May from North to South of France. Native to the undergrowth of Central Europe and the meadows of Greece and Turkey, this rustic flower of the family Ranunculaceae has a false air of wild rose (Rosa canina) which gives it the common name of christmas rose . Very elegant, it delights collectors, who appreciate the diversity of shapes and colors of this winter pearl.
Many varieties of hellebores
The most famous Christmas rose is undoubtedly the Helleborus Niger, because this early variety is very likely to be in bloom on December 24. With its very open white petals and dark yellow stamens, it seduces with its simplicity and punctuality. But in recent years, there have been many much more original cultivars with single or double flowers, which delight us with the delicacy of their petals. Creamy white, yellow, green, pink, red, peach, salmon, purple or even dark black, there is something for everyone! Some varieties are spotted, others have a fine white border on their outline, others finally have frilly or delicately veined petals… A real festival!
Hellébores, instructions for use
If the hellebore resists temperatures as low as -15 ° C (yes, if), it cannot stand being placed above the chimney… Often offered during the holidays, it can stay inside for a few days, provided that it is placed in a slightly heated place, such as a window sill. From January 2, head for the fresh air, in a planter or in the ground! Remember to choose its location well, in a rather shaded area and cool, neutral or acidic soil, because the hellebore hates to change places ... Also think of protecting your Christmas roses from high winds, and enriching the earth with compost in the spring to give them the strength to leave the following year. Last advice: do not hesitate to wear gloves and wash your hands well after handling your hellebores, these are toxic flowers that must be kept away from children and animals…
