Calculation of footage

Whether your fence is provided between two solid walls, wooden posts, or suspended, calculate the yardage of wood by adding 10 cm for each slat, so as to facilitate the realization of the assemblies. Do not forget to increase the sections of wood if its final height exceeds 250 cm.

A mid-wood assembly

Each piece of wood is notched over half its thickness, which makes it possible to obtain a very neat work, with a practically invisible assembly.

The step by step

What is beautiful, in a screen, is the multiplication of woods and the play of opacities and transparencies formed by the opposition between wood and paper ... which, obviously, multiplies the work!

1/ Using a square, mark on all the vertical slats the location of the assembly of the horizontal slats, and on the vertical slats the location of the horizontal slats. 2/ Use a batten drop to trace the width of the assembly by carefully positioning it on the line. 3/ For a perfect job, use a pen, whose graduation makes it possible to position the point with precision and thus obtain an impeccable line. 4/ With a miter saw, saw on the lines and up to the mark of the anchor. 5/ Using a perfectly sharp wood chisel and mallet, gradually and gently remove half the thickness of the slat. 6/ Repeat this work as many times as there are assemblies… Take your time! 7/ With the file, carefully deburr the edges. 8/ Place your fence on the floor, fit the various elements together and check that they are perfectly adjusted and square… Correct if necessary. 9/ Apply a thin trickle of wood glue to the notches, then assemble, checking the squareness again. 10/ To reinforce the assembly, make, in its center, a pilot hole with a drill bit with a diameter slightly smaller than that of the screw. 11/ Countersink slightly so that the screw head does not come out, then screw. 12/ Then put your paper by sticking it on the frame. 13/ You can hide the collage by a flat or molded rod, which will give volume to your work.

Good to know

There are a multitude of rice papers or vegetable papers whose textures vary from the most transparent and fine (beware, it tears easily) to the most opaque, where the vegetable fibers are very apparent. But you can also opt for a metallic mesh with very fine mesh, very trendy lately! Everything depends on the atmosphere you want to create.
